New Upper Hunter Shire Deputy Mayor Pat Ryan says he didn’t expect to be chosen for the role so quickly.
The Merriwa farmer voted in six votes to three over Murrurundi’s Peter McGill after Adam Williamson was eliminated after his name was drawn out of a hat when there was a three-way tie in the first round of voting.
But Councillor Ryan said his elevation to Deputy Mayor doesn’t guarantee he’ll always vote the same way as the Mayor.
