Merriwa residents may describe the local water supply as gross and disgusting but when it comes to radioactivity levels it is all good.
That’s the finding following detailed testing by the Australian Nuclear Science and Technology Organisation.
Upper Hunter Shire Council said further testing has found the water has a radioactivity dose ranging between 0.2 and 0.34 mSv per year, which is well below the national reference level of 1.

The council said they will continue to monitor the drinking water at Merriwa in line with official health recommendations to verify the safety and quality of the water supply.
