Local environmentalists are celebrating a temporary victory over one of the biggest coal mines in the Upper Hunter.
Hunter Valley Operations (HVO) has withdrawn its proposal to drastically expand its north and south coal mines near the town.
The decision follows action in the Federal Court by the Hunter Environment Lobby.

HVO had hoped to extend the life of the mines by up to 25 years.
They’ve confirmed they’ll submit an updated application in the future.
