An Upper Hunter mum has started a petition calling on health authorities to reopen the maternity unit at Muswellbrook Hospital.
Paige Sawkins is concerned the closest birthing hospital in Singleton is close to 45 minutes away.
The facility has mainly just been used for housing COVID-positive patients in the past few years.

She said this has led to tragic circumstances including a birth in an Emergency Department toilet at the hospital.
The petition has already attracted 470 signatures.
